Coaches sign contracts just like players. "Firing" McLellan is similar to having him be a healthy scratch on the coaching team. In the past, other teams would buy out his contract if they wanted to hire him after being fired. Now, SJS could feasibly opt out of the buyout and get a pick instead.

if thats the case you might as well start drafting/trading coaches like palyers because paying a 2nd or 3rd for a coach is ridiculous
teams wont end up getting picks coaches will end up not getting hired the only people that benefit are the guys that fire the coach in the first place which shouldnt be how it works
teams will prob hire coaches fire them and then try to get picks for it for a better rebuild just hire n fire like 3 coaches a season stock up on 2nd and 3rds

THey didnt buy him out though. He didnt take the rest of his money. It wasn't a buy out they mutually backed out of the contract

He's still under contract. "Mutual" probably means SJS won't pursue the pick though.

Habs should get a pick for losing Gerard Gallant, Guy Boucher and Kirk Muller.

I was more talking about the coaches being paid by former team after they've signed with someone else and pick has been exchanged. Nobody has mentioned that that I've seen, was curious where that came from.

Speaking of coaches which ones are available atm looking for jobs ?
