I get that being able to print "things" is cool I guess
but I don't see why every one is super stoked on it
so you can buy a printer to make cheep shitty tchotchke , who fucking cares?
idk maybe its just me
Well on a large scale it means you can cut WAY down on manufacturing costs because instead of having like 300 specialized machines for manufacturing specific parts you can have one do everything. From a plastics perspective you gain structural integrity by not having to have seams. From a medical side they'll be able to print human organs (and already have to an extent) using living cells. From an automotive perspective once this is developed to use metals, that super delicate and expensive part you broke doesn't need to be made by specialized equipment, it can be printed at your local mechanic. It can also be used to create theoretical shapes for scientists, data visualization for analysts, and probanly a lot of crazy other shit.
from a personal perspective, personal printers will probably be used most by amateur inventors for easy prototypes. Me, I was just thinking of fucking around with it... but it has practical uses around the house too.
Basically it means you can easily make shit that it takes a lot of time, money, and attention to detail by pressing a button then going hunting or having a beer with friends lol.
