my dad got a ticket and went to court to fight it and the cop never showed up
instant win for my dad and apparently thats not super uncommon at least around here

if you go to court go with the intent to fight it or just pay the fine why go to court to plead guilty

Only if you plead to a lesser offense (which I assume isn't applicable for you). If you're not prepared to fight it, just pay the ticket and hope your insurance company doesn't find out until your demerit points expire.

insurance doesnt base premium increase on demerit points they are based on conviction, minor major serious.

the good thing about fighting is longer that the conviction is unreported and therefore lower premiums until then.

also i have got demerit points off without proposing a lesser charge.

That's essentially the same thing as demerit points are only added onto your drivers abstract after you've been convicted. And demerit points are assigned to certain offenses, the number of which is static and not subject to change because you plead guilty. You must have plead to a different charge than what your ticket was for. For example, 20 over is three points, while 30 over is four points. If you plead guilty to a speeding ticket which is 30 over, you have to get four points. You can't get any less because you have been convicted of a speeding infraction in the four demerit point range. The only way you can get less if you plead to a speeding ticket under 30 over.
