yes, but if its 5% now, that's like, what. 3.6? or some shit

the step between 3.6 and 5 is major, and saying it's going to grow 5 mil every year suggests that there'll be a possibility to add a top6 forward every year .)

No it doesn't, because salaries will adjust. You're already seeing it with clarkson and crawford. Tavares' next contract could very well be 10m/yr, at least above malkin and crosby. Maybe it will scale a little less than the amount the cap does, some of it will be applied to signing players from overseas and competing with what the KHL keeps offering.

Except for poor teams *cough*sens*cough* it will be the norm to pay a 3rd liner 3m+. With a rising cap that's what teams will need to do to stay competitive.

/e plus let's be honest, if it gets to the point where cap is rising 5m per year you know the owners are gonna have another lockout and cut it down again.

yep, thats what im afraid of and tahts why i don't think it'll rise by 5m per year from the get go.

obviously newly signed contracts will adjust, but all these long term signed players will be cheap by then and moveable

a player signed for 7 years now at 5.x will be super cheap in 4 years when the cap is +20m according to the leafs fan

Exactly. And the leafs fan is 100% right. People moaning about this don't realize that there is ~2-3% money inflation so money will be worth that much less every year, +5% revenue growth (probably more), +>5% cap growth from the inflator asserted by the NHLPA.

In four years a 5m/yr AAV is gonna be vastly different. At the end of Clarkson's contract his 5m will be similar to 3-ish today.

so you think the cap will be 83mil in 4 years?

it'll just force another lock out every 6 years or whatever the CBA last for

Cap vs effective cap but it's possible. And it may or may not cause lockouts, I expect there may be talk about lowering nhlpa's inflator because 5% is ludicrous, it should be 2-3 to match real money inflation. Revenue rises with cap, so owners can afford to spend more - they're just gonna want to capture more of that revenue by lowering cost the next time around.

I actually find it hilarious that they call the 5% inflator an option because the NHLPA has always and always will exercise it.

effective cap is always a different story than cap, but saying the cap will rise by 5m every year is just ridicilous

the worst bullshit this lockout was the buyouts, the fuck was that?

anyway, i just reacted on the 5m number as a guarantee, because i don't see it being the same place as cap was pre-lockout in 2 years

2.4m made in 48 games compared to 3.3 in 82 in 2011-2012. That's HRR, not total revenue. Formula for cap space is:

Revenue*0.50 = players' share
Players share - player benefits = cap share (benefits were 90m last year)
Cap share/30 = cap midpoint
Midpoint*1.05 = inflated midpoint
Inflated midpoint +/- 15% = cap range

You can do the math but mine comes out to around a 77m cap max if they are assuming revenues will stay true from this year to next (which would be 4.1b, a 25-ish percent increase which more than offsets the players losing % of HRR)

I would be SHOCKED if it isn't back up to 70.2m in two years. Owners can make a case that the shortened season contributed to the increase but even so, a 5% growth would cover the old cap.

oO?

ok, it might actually go up that fast, but how long is the cba? 6? that means it'd go up to 90m b4 next CBA which is ridicilous

first few years at 3-5 per year would be possible, but don't think it's going up 30m
