Dude. It's so easy, I make it in my oven but I hear throwing 60 bucks at a dehydrator is worth every penny also. Just cut it into strips, marinate it in BBQ sauce or whatever other spices, lay it on your oven racks (put tin foil on the bottom to catch the drippings or its a bitch to clean), and drop the oven to the lowest temperature for 5+ hours until it's completely dry. I usually stick a wooden spoon in the door and put it 10 degrees over lowest so the moisture can escape more easily.
3 pounds of chicken for me is about $7 after trimming, and it makes around a pound or pound and a half of jerky. Lasts me several weeks and keeps (theoretically) for several months. I think the same amount of beef runs $18 if that's what you're looking for, I actually grabbed the "1 day from expiring" stuff from the butcher for cheaper and it still tastes great.
And if anyone is on around 5 or 5:30EST that's probably when I'd be starting. Probably a barb? Haven't done one of those in a while.
