How can you ever learn if you blame failure on external factors?
The best hockey players don't say "oh I didn't get that puck because so and so is faster" they think " I gotta work harder, hire a speed skating coach and become faster "
I never said anything about learning, and there's a difference between global and local attributions, both positive and negative. Global negative being in your example something like "I didn't get the puck, I'm worthless". Local negative being more focused on the specifics, like "I didn't get the puck, I need to work on my skating". Yet another thing is whether the attribution is static or dynamic, i.e. do you think can you change it or not, which already has a lot to do with learning. Sorry for the sort of incomprehensible post, but I guess the main point is that don't blame
everything on yourself and take a lot of credit for your successes if you want to maintain a positive self-image. Also it's a good idea to be willing to see your obvious shortcomings as a lack of skills you don't
yet possess but are able to achieve instead of seeing yourself as a failure.
