Yep, exactly. The problem is, the more far-from-norm their promises are, the more bitter a taste is left in peoples' mouths at the end of the presidency. Obama's big promises were closing guantanamo, rebuilding new orleans, and cutting down on troops in Iraq. He did all of that but to lesser extents.

Trump is promising to rid America of immigrants while Bernie wants to make college free or close to it, bit that it won't affect the lower and middle income people much tax wise because he's going to hit the corporations and wall street for all they're worth. Hillary is saying she wants to help illegal immigrants become legal and offer education assistance to those who need it so people don't go into debt just to attend university.

Which of those three do you think needs to water themselves down (aka alienate themselves) the least?

Anyway the way the government works, no matter who wins it's not like the country is gonna implode. But two of those three candidates all but guarantee the other party wins the next election after this one.
