i dont feel it's the case. It seems more like Nylader gave them a number from the get go and it is legit too much.
Like I said, i dont think its the case he gave them a number and I have a feeling he is nowhere near worth it... I mean he ain't no pastrnak anyways. but also consider this is Kyle Dubas' first major contract negotiation so playing his hand hard and calling a potential bluff should have been expected. Not a whole lot of time to punch out a contract/ trade... but Nylander sitting this season out and picking up right where he left off in negotiations is going to stigmatize both ends no matter how this lands.
At some point Nylander must consider this is his prime years for developing more skill, how many millions is sacrificing your abilities worth?
That Pastrnak deal is an absolute steal. That was the prime time hometown discount. No other team can expect to make that comparison because the getting will not be that good for them.
I think that was an ideal situation in which a player loved the city, and the 2 talented players on his line so he decided to take a cut.
I agree Nylander is not as good as Pastrnak. However he is an explosive youngster will all kinds of offensive talent. Think of how many teams are coveting having him on there team. His best could be yet to come and he fits in with the Leafs high tempo offense.
I think the Leafs will have to overpay on him and ship him off because they will be in a cap crunch. Either that or make some other moves to keep him. They will have over 30 mil tied to 3 players soon, and close to 40 if they keep Nylander. Hard to see that happening.
Personally I think the Draisatl contract (which would be favorable to use within the Nylander camp) is a bit of an overpay. Personally I think Draisatl is better than Nylander because he is a center and has more physicality/ability to protect the puck and go in the corners. That is the style you need for playoff hockey.
I am sure Nylander is reaching, a bit at least, but the idea of a talented youngster becoming available is quite rare so the outside interest forces teams to overpay. Much like the Draisatl situation. Imagine how many teams wanted to make a push to get him.
