So I have a question. I was at the game tonight and there was an overwhelming dislike, maybe even hate, for Oiler #19 Justin Schultz. Is this because of the 2012 draft? Anyone have anymore insight on this matter? I suppose I just don't follow hockey enough to know, but I am very curious.
Hate from Anaheim to #19 of course
Players can become free-agents if they wait long enough without signing a contract with the team that drafted them. That's what Schultz did, he didn't sign with Anaheim then left for Edmonton.
It doesn't happen all that often but it's an awful rule that should be changed to protect teams. I believe teams only get a compensatory pick if the player in question was a first rounder, and it's only a 2nd round pick.
I guess you Ducks fans can take solace in the fact that it's been a gong-show in Edmonton while he's been there and he probably would have developed into a solid player in Anaheim where there's a lot less scrutiny, a much better leadership group and a much better team overall.
