Cap hit is calculated off of salary so retaining salary = retaining cap hit. Since Gonchar's contract is 5m both years, 8% salary retention = 8% cap retention, but if he were on a front-loaded or back-loaded contract, salary and cap wouldn't match up.

It was a playoff move. Moen has been useless in post-season and gonchar has been epic, historically. This gives habs a better playoff run.
