it depends on how you come at it I guess. What naughty dog does really well I think is in building environments (like the part with Bill's partner) they leave clues as to what happened to the people who abandoned them or died in them. It's very rare that you'll pick up a note someone wrote and never hear about them again.
There aren't a ton of them though. The absolute best one was in the sewer like place with Henry and Sam so when you get there just take your time. I know some people probably don't care about it but I think it expands the story so much, the whole "immersion" thing is augmented by letting you understand the way people thought and acted after the apocalypse event... Not just how your own main character develops.
