The bulk of the time spent playing it is story stuff. If you just run through it and skip all the cutscenes you can do it in a matter of hours. I did the same thing with the uncharted games, it's more to just tick off the "beat all the difficulties" checkbox. Most of the enjoyment came from the first play through on normal.

Took me like 3 days to beat it on the first run through, then a night or so (2 for the hardest difficulty) do to just the gameplay parts for each difficulty.

 it depends on how you come at it I guess. What naughty dog does really well I think is in building environments (like the part with Bill's partner) they leave clues as to what happened to the people who abandoned them or died in them. It's very rare that you'll pick up a note someone wrote and never hear about them again.

There aren't a ton of them though. The absolute best one was in the sewer like place with Henry and Sam so when you get there just take your time. I know some people probably don't care about it but I think it expands the story so much, the whole "immersion" thing is augmented by letting you understand the way people thought and acted after the apocalypse event... Not just how your own main character develops.

For those of you who don't own a ps3 or won't buy the last of us:

Basically a "movie" of all the cutscenes side by side (and a bit of story-heavy gameplay). I did this yesterday for Injustice: Gods Among Us and it was actually really enjoyable. Will probably do the same for other games in the future. For the most part you can guess what happened between scenes.

/e and 20 minutes later I find myself still watching even though I've beaten the game 4 times lol. Tad bit obsessive...

The purge is kinda stupid. Their neighbors want to kill them because he sold them all security systems (which work just fine) and used the money from that to build a house and generally take care of his family.
stated in the first 5 minutes of the movie so not really a spoiler.. But seriously. What the fuck. You're mad at him because you chose to give him money for something which he delivered and which makes your family safe... Is he supposed to do that for fucking free?

Movie was decent but the overarching story was really flimsy and dumb. Entertaining in the sense of watching people kill each other
