If you look at tampa and avs, the players want to return, take discounts, play for each other. You look at the leafs, and despite winning in regular season, they can't get it done in playoffs, your teammates are revolving doors cuz they're gone unless they take peanuts for their worth. Media/fans shit's on them for a mistake and run em out of town, and they usually win cup elsewhere. So why would/should Matthews wanna stay? He can go to another team and try to actually win while getting paid? Idk
I don’t think guys like Mathews and others ( Taveres ) can do both, you either take the money and gimp a teams cap situation or take a discount and win some cups ( Crosby ). Teams like Tampa of course have a huge advantage because of the tax situation. Look at Chicago , the years Kane / Toews got their 10 mil payout ( along with big contracts for Seabrook and Keith) Chicago couldn’t compete seriously for the cup. They where competitive but no threat to win a cup with no cap to spend on the bottom half of their roster.
