There are so many things wrong with what you said...
1. Tanev is an advanced stats darling, it's his traditional stats that are low (points and hits).
2. Russell has terrible advanced stats. Similar to Gudbranson, he's supposed to be a defensive D-man but the advanced stats show that he's always in his own zone. That's why Dallas choosing him over Hamhuis was confusing.
Advanced stats can tell you facts, as long as they are in context, and aren't skewed by bias.
With the way stats are now, you can settle a debate like "who is the better puck-mover between player x and y" because there are definitive stats that tell which player is better at outletting and carrying.
