Okay here's the final real story that has come from multiple people including local radio guys and national insiders like Bob and Dreger:

1) Dallas offered around the same deal to both Calgary and Vancouver but actually did prefer Russell, so they made that deal.

2) Close to the deadline, Dallas made another call to Vancouver and offered a crappier deal that the Canucks were offended by so they didn't reply.

Canucks management decided it was better to get nothing than be embarrassed by a shit trade (probably was a 3rd + prospect).

Here's how I feel now:

I'm actually glad they didn't take that shitty offer. It's barely better than nothing and it would set a precedent that our management can get swindled and played.

However, I believe our management is still completely incompetent because a good GM would have been able to work the market better and/or work Hamhuis better to create more and better possibilities.

This is just another example that shows Benning has no clue how to negotiate, whether it's trades or contracts.

Even if Hamhuis had hog tied them to 2 teams, I have no idea how Benning wasnt able to find a deal with either team.

Regardless of them getting 'ripped off', a good management team never lets players just walk away for free. If you look at Chicago, or LA or whatever team you think is managed well, they very rarely let assets leave for nothing. They identify their 'core' and who they want to build around and trade anyone who they wont be able to re-sign.

I'm not posting here to gloat, I just see a lot of similarities between the 2010 Flames (Lead by Feaster) and the current Canucks.

You're right, this team has no plan or direction.

It's clear they've made moves to remove the old core and inject youth but they are doing it in a half-assed way, and you can't just have one foot in the door and expect to win. You need to either go all out when appropriate (Chicago) or scorch the earth (Toronto). This middle-ground just breeds mediocrity.

The fans are pissed, even the uneducated casuals. At the deadline you either have to sell winning or hope and we did neither. One week before the "state of the franchise" town hall meeting and season ticket renewals.

eh even if it's an embarassing return,
it's still something for a rental, and has a good chance of re signing with the nucks, IF the nucks want him back.
benning already proved he makes fucked up trades, so i dont see why it would be that embarrassing anyway huehue
3rd + prospect > nth
plus our team would be even more shitty without hamhuis, for higher 1st pick! jaja
benning is a shit at his job, but his drafting seems pretty good so that 3rd could've been somewhat useful

but ya nucks are like half assed team right now cos benning/tl prolly wants to rebuild faster, but the owner doesnt.

i dont blame benning for not being able to trade Vrbata, as no teams wanted him. I rather blame WD and Vrby himself jaja

I really feel like it's easy to sell to the fans that you are transitioning and trying to get prospects/picks for players. Even if they got ripped off by whoever, I'm sure the majority of the fans would be okay with them admitting that they need some depth to their prospect pool. The thing that we've certainly seen in Calgary, is it is crucial to have a large prospect pool because you never know which player is going to put it together at the NHL level. Recent examples at least in Calgary would be TJ Brodie (4th round pick) and Johnny Gaudreau (4th Round Pick). Sure, high first round picks are helpful but the more chances you have the better because you never know when that 3rd round pick is going to turn into something worth while.

The Flames certainly went through this period and I can honestly say it was the most frustrating era for the team at least in my eyes. They went from cup contenders and when they got too old they desperately tried to make it work. It was obvious as a hardcore fan that they were delusional because even if they made the playoffs, they werent likely to get far. I suppose there is always that 1 in a million shot, but to me it just seemed like wasted years on Iginla, Bouwmeester & Kipper in which you had real assets becoming less and less valuable because of their age.

Vrbata, Hasen both injured.

Gaunce called up, wont be here in time for game.

Weber gets put on forward. Playing on a line with Burrows and McCann. Holy fuck I love this team.

Practice lines were

S-S-Etem
Baertschi-Granlound-Virtanen .........................
Vey - Horvat - Dorsett
Burrows - McCann - Weber
