Conservative wave is running thru the first world countries right now. Sooo there's that.
It's not a 'conservative' thing, it's a right wing, protectionist, populist wave of voters saying 'fuck everyone else let's look out for number 1' right now, with a variety of motivations. It's a reaction to increasing globalization. There's also a lot of nationalism in there, and definitely a good dose of racism, or to be generous, an indiference to racism. Politicians around the world are trying to latch on to Trump's surprise victory by pandering to xenophobia and protectionist policies, and O'Leary want to be Canada's Trump. Harper very recently tried to do the same sort of stuff (Hijab banning, 'barbaric cultural practices' hotline, etc), and he rightfully got crucified for trying that stuff in Canada.
With the Trump's US planning to pull back from the rest of the world, both politically or economically, and focus inward, and the probable impending collapse of the EU with the U.K. gone (and soon France?), there's a major shift in the world's power balance in the works, for the first time since the end of WWII. Buckle up.
