Home invasions are a big problem in South Africa. If you don't live in a gated community most people own guns to protect themselves. How he mistook his white girlfriend for an invader doesn't make much sense to me.

It's sounding like an accident. Dead girls family and friends, said they had a good relationship, and there's precedent for accidental shootings. A few years ago a rugby player accidently killed his daughter when she was taking the car out of the driveway in the middle of the night.
