Participation medals actually make kids feel worse because they know they don't deserve them. Having only top place medals promotes and instills that hard work pays off.

do they still give out ESSO medals for 'most improved', 'most sportsmanlike' and 'MVP/best player'?

they do rookie of the year , most sportsmanlike, best forward , best defensemen , play off mvp
