I can try it on my tv/ other monitor.

Should i power down the pc before swaping from this one to the next?

Doesn't matter

just make sure to adjust the resolution to whatever the new screen is

should be fine just pluggin hdmi into tv. your screen will flash and then adjust to proper pixels.
