I think Pierre's right on the money. Babcock rested the 3rd and 4th line in the first period and the hawks just weren't ready for the sudden burst in energy that comes from having them eat up minutes all of a sudden.
May have been aimed more at keeping the top two lines rested for period 3, but really seems to be the deciding factor. Hawks are pooped, wings are out skating them.
