AH is effed up right now, rofl. I've taken a break from this game for the past couple weeks, was A1/A2 Inferno at the end of May, and it seems like things have gone completely to shit since I've been gone. Apparently people have made billions in a couple hours off this exploit. I don't see any way to fix the economy except for a massive wipe. No matter what they do they'll piss off a large portion of their user base, lol.

I believe the dupe is patched now, but the damage is done

Apparently the AH was based on local computer time as opposed to the AH/gameplay server time. Players were able to trick the auction process by setting the clocks on their computers back, then cancel auctions that had already ended. Apprently it caused both parties to receive gold (Bidding player gets a refund for a cancelled auction, and the selling player gets money for a sold item). Put an item up for a huge starting bid, get double that amount, rinse, and repeat.

HUUUUUGE oversight if this was the case, basing the AH auctions on local time. Not sure how that could make it past code walks, testing, QA, beta. I really have no idea...

why would they do that, you think it would be easier just to pull a server time based off your timezone or w/e

It would. It would be much easier and much more secure, especially given everythine else in this game is pretty much generated by the server before being given to the client. I have no idea, but almost everyone discussing a dupe is discussing a method involving using local system time as opposed to server time. Time exploits are one of the first things you test for in anything that has any sort of time functionality involved with it. I just can't imagine the lacksidasical code walk discussion that went along with somehow missing that they were using the system clock instead of the server clock for the auction house, lol.
