they are going to lose a bunch of their good bottom 6 guys due for raises unless they move out some of the higher paid guys like killorn gourde johnsson cirelli palat(all making 4m+) point needs a new deal next season

according to capfriedly they are still 6m over the cap next season with all the rfa and UFA players from this season not undercontract so its likely they work out a deal with seattle to free up some cap or else they are fucked

I just hope no gm accept to deal with brisebois to help him out. But ofc this wont happen.

Food for thought, a few years back there was a vote among all NHL teams on whether to keep this loophole or to change it.

Tampa voted against keeping the loophole
Montreal voted to keep the loophole

dont blame tampa, blame the rules
They're bending the rules but didnt break any rules.
It's cheap af but still legit

Excuses are for losers
Winners find solutions

We lost 4-1 to Vegas game 1

ITS NOT OVER!!!! GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!

i dont think gms expected it to be this abused
to replace all that salary and then just keep the guy on ltir until playoffs then activate when salaries arent in effect is pretty bullshit

thats what bothers me not that they are over cap but the fact they were able to keep kucherov who was clearly healthy on LTIR and keep the players putting them over cap
they should have been forced to take him off ltir and trade/waive the players that put them over cap not ride it out til playoffs and then have like 20m over cap

thats a big oversight by the nhl that needs to be fixed sure tampa is "abiding by the rules" but this is an instance that the rules need to be changed so this doesnt ever happen again

Cause you cant really know for sure if the player is ready or not if the player says he is not.. cant really argue
If you force him to come back and he gets injured that would look dumb af.

Just put a 5-10% extra cap limit in playoffs and problem is fixed.
Or even better, same limit. If its 80 millions well its 80. Idk why cap stop existing in playoffs, doesnt really make sense.

i think its something like the salary they get paid is for the regular season because playoffs are not guaranteed for all teams so you cant rate a contract based on playoff games
but yeah the cap hit should still be in effect come playoffs whether they get paid or not cap hits should be there and this would be fixed
i dont think anybody thought a gm would expose it like this though and abuse the systems in place i dont think its going to remain the way it was after this season how can it

and yeah cant really say whether or not he was healthy but like months before the playoffs it was stated he would be back for playoffs 100% confirmed like he was already ready to return but couldnt due to cap its a little suspicious
thats another thing i think should be looked into if a payer is on LTIR and they fill the cap have nhl drs go check him out make sure they arent pulling some bs like this and just LTIR a healthy player to keep a stacked over the cap team

the good news is there is multiple ways to fix this and the nhl should be looking into them because this is a bad look on the nhl and you know the nhl doesnt like bad looks

For real, its literally up to team doctors to determine whether a player is fit to play. Of course team doctors are going to do whats best for tge team if they are told to do so. It should most definitely be independant doctors determining a players eligibility to return or stay on ltir.

cap doesnt exist in playoffs because you dont know if you're gonna be the oilers and get swept to play only a week, or be the habs and play for a month etc.

gotta give credit to tampa though, they tried to solve problem by trading johnson or whoever and couldn't find any takers cuz of the flat cap and pandemic, cuz they needed to sign cirelli, cernak and sergachev.

so they probably exhausted all the options to find ways to make the cap work. they traded with sens to get some LTIR players back to "increase" their cap which still wasn't enough until they moved out more cap space. They even waived johnson and no one picked him up lol. My guess is that they've asked if anyone on the team has a nagging injury that they would like to deal with.

Last season ended in june, so kucherov could've got the surgery anytime btwn then and Jan, but he waited to get the surgery end of december to make sure he will be back healthy until after end of regular season. Otherwise, in a normal season without a flatcap or cap problems, i guarantee that these NHL players would want to get the surgery asap in the off season to return to play hockey in the mid season. So they did well covering their basis, cuz in case these suspicion and QQ happens, they refer to the average timeline of the said surgery and lines up consistently so even if NHL investigates it won't be sus. 10/10
