The whole point of the CBA was to scale down contracts. It's not like giroux is a Crosby or Quick who can carry his team into playoffs almost singlehandedly. He's not worth a penny over 7m at this point.
He is their leader. He is the guy Philadelphia is going to turn to. again though, Perry and Getzlaf getting 8.25M are the easiest comparables along with Staal. It would have been nice to have it a bit lower, but that contract is what it's going to take to lock him up. If he was to go to free agency next year you could be sure someone would give him more. Think what you want, but he's an elite player who is only getting better.
