Emelin had major knee surgery over the summer and was playing on his off side. He was still better than Gorges who cost us several games on his own by running into our goalie and deflecting shots into our net while trying to "shotblock". Gorges looks good because Subban carries him. Gorges does nothing except shotblock. He can't hold the line he can't clear the puck he can't defend guys 1 on 1 or break up 2 on 1s. He's not physical and isn't able to keep up with any decent skaters in the league. He can't shoot the puck or make a decent pass to save hi slife. Emelin may have flaws but he can do the majority of the things Gorges can't on top of blocking more shots than him in the playoffs where it mattered.
Are you high? Gorges can defend pretty mutch all situation. Gorges have the same role as Bouillon, do nothing fancy, and he is doing it right. You rarerly see Gorges give a breakaway to the opponent, or very very off position. He is always near the puck and cover his player.
Emelin have plenty of problem defensivly, his is talented to hit people, not to play the puck. I see more Gorges on a second pairing (being the 4th dman) and Emelin on a third pairing so he can have more rest to hit people more easily.
a Gorges type of player usually get 2.5 to 3m per year, no doubt. He earned his .9 because of his incredible leardership talent. He was there for the Kostitsyn saga, when we were last in league, Price saga, Subban Saga, Carbonneau Saga... he always keep his positivism and always dodged drama. I was one of those who wanted him to get the C and not Gionta.
Comparing Gorges to Weaver is excellent, because both are the same type of player. But Weaver get low paid because he never proved anything plus he is 36 years old. Gorges have grown up with the organisation, he prove himself years after years and only 29 years old. In my book, he is worth every penny of his 3.9
