I think he assumed Girard was coming in to drop the gloves and he just jumped the gun, that's the only rational explanation I can think of.

tbh seeing the video it does look like girard went after him maybe to say something he gave him a bit of a crosscheck but rinaldo is the kind of guy that gets jumped a lot
doesnt surprsie me if rinaldo thought he was going to be getting jumped and punched him normally you give a guy a shot like that and its to turn him around and drop the mitts

not as dirty as you guys made it sound but not the kind of stuff you wanna see in hockey either
