As of now I don't think it's possible because they are not including mod support for security reasons.

I can understand the reasoning behind it but it does alienate a decent portion of the fan base. There has been a lot of backlash over this so it may change.

I'm not a big mod guy myself (PD2 is the only one I played and only for a few months) but there's no doubt that the mod community is a big reason why the game is as active as it is overall 20+ years later.

For me the base game is good enough, and I haven't played proper multiplayer in over a dozen years probably so I'm looking forward to that.

I will say that the shard system in PD2 was awesome. Made farming feel a lot less hopeless. You may not find anything good but you probably will find a couple shards which will at least give you a chance at something good. In general those guys did an amazing job with that mod with limited resources. I never felt like the core feeling of the game was ever vandalized.

In D2 you can farm for hours and find nothing of value. But a big reason for that is how trash the economy is due to bots and dupes. If you go to east ladder trade section right now you can find a mid-roll CoA for like 2 FG. This is like one of the best end-game items and a rare item to find, it shouldn't be this way.

Only 100% perfect uniques, or godly rares, or niche items are worth anything. What are the chances you're going to find one of these things when farming? It kills the game.

personally i think what devalues HRs in d2 is the ability to cube them and lack of good runewords using them
its a great thing to have but with bots you can take dime a dozen runes pul-ist from running countess and cube up to a vex or ohm in a night
when there is no bots that system is fine but when there is bots it really makes the lower HRS just as dime a dozen
then you can do forges and get gul runes to cube to a vex ect ect they arent super hard to get like a zod rune or something you dont cube up to a zod and u dont want to cube 2 bers for a jah ect ect
so there is a point where runes are valued because of runewords like enigma coh infinity make runes have value that arent worth cubing so anything after those runes are often worth just as much or more


id say the breakpoint is probably Lo rune cubing 2x Lo for a sur rune will likely never happen and Lo has some useful runewords such as grief fort doom
sur doesnt have much use in runewords so its got value in you can cube 2x for ber but its not very sought after

D4 is probably just going to be a D3 expansion. I think it's clear it's going to be another game for casuals and just won't have the details and intricacies that made D2 great.

I think D2 with some new items and skills balances would work. Doesn't have to upset the meta entirely, just shake it up a bit: a new option for caster gloves, caster shield, max block shield, melee boots, a new ring to challenge soj/rf/bk, etc. New endgame team based pvm content would be rad, too.

Just a few things here and there would breathe fresh air into the game without changing it at its core.

I think if this remaster is a success they'll eventually do it. Content = money for Blizzard. They've already sent out emails to fans asking if they'd like new content and I believe the responses have been positive for the most part.
