I wouldn't resign Volchenkov, at least not to a long term contract. Sens' defense is fine for next season, no reason to resign both Sutton and Volchenkov.

Philips - Kuba
Karlsson - Sutton/Volchenkov
Carkner - Prospect/RandomShitty

Depend on how much he ask.. But yeah, maybe to keep Sutton with a lower contract would be a good idea, so we would have space to sign fa.

Yea, I like our future alot. We got alot of young talent..

Karlsson, Regin, Smith, Foligno ( people seems to forget that he is only 22 ), Cowan, Wiercioch and we got Lehner in net, wich I think will be an amazing goaltender soon :p

Jonathan Cheechoo still has another year left on his contract at $3.5 million, but the Ottawa Sun predicts he'll be bought out with the remaining salary split over three years.

This will give the Sens some breathing room under the cap as they try to fill out a roster currently stacked with veterans making a nice chunk of change.

Cheechoo's had a rough past year. He came over to Ottawa from San Jose in the Dany Heatley deal, then he was buried in the minors for a while. It's quite a difference from just four years ago, when he had 56 goals for the Sharks.

The Ottawa Senators' top playoff performer, Matt Cullen, will likely not be coming back.

It's not that the Sens don't want him, but that hey don't have the money for him. As the Ottawa Citizen writes, Cullen will likely get a significant raise from his current $2.8 million salary after the 33-year-old's strong postseason play.

The Sens probably won't get Anton Volchenkov signed either because of money problems. But this all changes is, somehow, GM Bryan Murray decides to deal Jason Spezza and his annual $7 million cap hit. That would give them some flexibility to move now, and for the future when other overpaid veterans play out their contracts.

Although there are reports  that the Ottawa Senators are working hard to keep D Anton Volchenkov, Sens GM Bryan Murray knows it will be pretty tough to bring this big blueliner back.

"I don't know whether or not I'm going to be able to get him signed," Murray told reporters (as per the National Post). "Cap numbers ... it's going to be very difficult."

And if Volchenkov leaves, as expected, one team that might pursue him is the Washington Capitals, the Ottawa Sun's Bruce Garrioch previously speculated.

Murray offered Volchenkov a five-year deal during the season, but it likely wasn't for anything close to $5 million a season, which is what he'll fetch on the free agent market. Volchenkov made $3.2 million this season.
