I think it was two or three. Im not saying they were right to do what they did, or that they couldnt have taken extra steps before hand, but if the dude listened in the first place none of this wouldve happened.
People have to understand that when a suspect has a history of violence against police, the way they are to handle it changes, and on top of having that history, he also was going for or had a weapon on him. Which further changes how the officers handle the situation. Personal safety is always #1, followed by the safety of the general public in the area. If the officer felt his life was in danger because of a violent offender with a weapon then he was well within his rights to discharge his weapon after repeatedly giving the man many opportunities to comply.
