I think it's different cuz njd tried to sign kovalchuk like Weber's contract and shit so nhl punished the teams that intentionally tried to abuse it.
Whereas this case is Ron just being a noob, and still compliant with current CBA aside from the error mentioned. They resubmitted it by adding 1.5m to 3rd yr or something

NJ ended up getting the pick returned as well

So bs, and he retires from nhl to get rid of the long contract and then comes back to the NHL lol.
