I can't find a good source but from what I read someone caught him with a high stick at camp and he was pissed.

Crosby and Malkin will be out for the start of training camp. Both suffered unknown injuries. Expected not to be long-term injuries.

I can't see him coming back at all, at his age it will be hard to recover and get back to game shape. Sucks for Philly/Timo

So essentially timonen is saying the chances of him playing again are slim, but he isn't retiring and will follow up in the new year
