With my career path I'm not gonna have a house and yard unless I want to commute 3 hours a day, at least not til I can afford a $1.5 million house that would be $150k in the Detroit suburbs (or $25k in Detroit proper).

I'm thinking in around 2 years I'll be looking to move somewhere with lower cost of living, because that'll be 5 years of work experience which gets me out of "entry level" job offerings. By then I'm hoping to be at a salary point (and maybe a combined salary with someone else) to afford a house with a yard and have 2-3 dogs. I do feel a little guilty having the dog cooped up in an apartment, and that's part of what took me so long to adopt... but after these first few weeks she seems really, really, ridiculously happy.

yup but better than a cage but no different from other animals who have far worse living conditions just for human needs

I said 3 hours per day, which is 1.5 hours each way, so...

1.5 hours, that was my commute when I was in the suburbs. 30 minutes to the train station, 1 hour to work. Or I could drive 2-ish hours in rush hour traffic and hate myself the whole way. Frankly the house I stayed at in a basement apartment was at least a $400k house.

Fuck that's one helluva commute.
I had a 1 hour commute once, each way. But was a 60km drive to work...

OK that makes more sense. I was taking it to mean a three hour commute each way. 1 1/2 hour is doable, but I understand why someone wouldn't want to do it. Metro DC is about the same size as metro Toronto so that confused me.
