Crates make a lot of dogs feel safe. Acts like a den. When she gets separation anxiety she gets destructive which is something that I'll train out of her but in the meantime, she can't be loose unsupervised.
I tried it without the crate and thought if I just had a bunch of toys to distract her and all my stuff put away she wouldn't chew. Then I came home to a hole in my mattress that was 4 inches in diameter.

It'll be easier when I have a 1 bedroom with a den, cuz then I can convert the den into a dog room.

The Rock was an awesome lip sync, but the show's too gimmicky to last :\ I love it as a skit on Jimmy Fallon.

I've never had that need. Although I've only owned two dogs (both Dobermans from when they were puppies.) Both of them were house trained within days, and never tore anything up. They've always had free run of the house. Apart from my old dog ripping up a roll of toilet paper or two, I've never had an issue.

Also, Lip Synch Battle could really grow depending on the guests. They need to make it better though. Rework it a bit, get rid of Chrissy Teigen, and just have Emma Stone on every single episode.

Yeah, I was hoping she'd be okay but unfortunately the large hole and torn out insides of my $1100 mattress was the tipping point. She's completely housetrained when it comes to the bathroom but she chews when she's anxious. That's the lab in her, it's a really common trait for them to be destructive.

It's funny, the one thing I was looking to NOT have in a dog was something that was crazy energetic. So of course it makes sense that I got a lab + border collie mix, two of the most high maintenance and energetic dogs out there. I've had her for 2.5 weeks and have lost 4 lbs because I have to tire her out so much in the morning and she's still at full energy when I get home from work

I have a friend who said her lab took about a year to be able to roam the house free. I'm thinking it should only take a few months with how insanely easy it's been to train her out of some of her other habits. I'm not big on crating myself, although I've heard it's really good to have the option.

I'm thankful I have some property to work with, and the river in the summer. When she needs to be tired out I just take out the tennis racket and a couple balls. Stand in the middle of the field, hit a ball one way, she grabs it and runs back to me at full speed. Once she gets close to me I hit another ball the other way so she just keeps running past me. Just keep her going back and forth at full speed for awhile, and she's spent. In the summer she doesn't even come in the house. CONSTANTLY running/swimming. She put on about 10 pounds over the winter. That will be coming off soon hopefully

With my career path I'm not gonna have a house and yard unless I want to commute 3 hours a day, at least not til I can afford a $1.5 million house that would be $150k in the Detroit suburbs (or $25k in Detroit proper).

I'm thinking in around 2 years I'll be looking to move somewhere with lower cost of living, because that'll be 5 years of work experience which gets me out of "entry level" job offerings. By then I'm hoping to be at a salary point (and maybe a combined salary with someone else) to afford a house with a yard and have 2-3 dogs. I do feel a little guilty having the dog cooped up in an apartment, and that's part of what took me so long to adopt... but after these first few weeks she seems really, really, ridiculously happy.

I loved when I was living in Toronto, and the city life. But after a taste of life on the water there is no way I'll go back. Thankfully housing is a lot more cheap around here
