Looks like I am about to get royally boot fucked by the CRA.
A family friend usually does my taxes and has apparently gone senile.....
Filed my brother as an infirm dependent without my knowledge or consent.
Now the CRA sends me a letter stating I need to provide documentation to support those claims. Claims I never consented to make. I called them thinking they made an error only to be shocked that those claims were made on my behalf.
Read into it a bit and it seems like he will not meet the requirements. I thought my tax return was a bit generous but wrote it off to contributing more into an RRSP and paying union dues.
It was a mistake to be pleasantly surprised with the CRA for a change. Should have known it was too good to be true.
Assuming I owe ~ 2-3k as a result of this. After this disaster I would advise everyone to either use a professional or read up extensively so you can file your own taxes with full confidence.
Do your own taxes using programs offered, it's like dummy proof.
I'd only have someone else do it for me, if it's a little more complicated than usual. If that's the case, definitely use a professional.
But that's nuts that he would do that without letting you know, was he trying to impress you guys?
