Ya in Edmonton and Calgary you technically got space to build in any direction whereas in Vancouver you realistically only have the east and maybe delta farmlands lol (I lived in delta, the people there don't want to develop anything)

I was joking haha. I've worked in alberta for 8 years now, flying back and forth between the two provinces, moving because i am taking on a new role career wise that requires me to be here every week. I actually liked the city of Calgary better but I needed to be in Edmonton for my job. Your comment about it being easier for starting a family hits home because I was looking to upsize in Vancouver and a 3 br townhouse costs 900k-1.2mil where I live, ridiculous.

i grew up in vancouver so it'll be a tough change, but thankfully i got lots of friends and coworkers here so that should help a little bit since Iim not starting from scratch. I am planning on renting out my condo in richmond so hopefully eventually if i do want to go back i have a little bit of equity to throw around on a bigger place

Will definitely miss not having to worry about winter for 9 months of the year, hopefully having an actual single family home that's a decent size should help lol

Did not know you have been going back and forth for years. Just knew you were From B.C.

I give you props for having the durability to do that. I am sure it is not easy.

Wish you the best of luck with your new career move.

that's why my plan is to move to AB if I start a family, but until then it's hard to replace BC. living without a car makes life a lot cheaper and i've been able to rent + save just fine. meanwhile in Calgary/Edmonton I'd absolutely need to own a car and cheaper housing/gas wouldn't make up the difference for a single dude like me. then not even accounting the need for a couple of vacations to get away from winter lolz

also being in AB it gave me some anxiety the higher % of people who just don't give a shit, a solid 10% less ppl fully vaccinated than BC yet people there acting like the pandemic is over. over here people still wearing masks and distancing even tho things are open, vaccination rates are better and you only need it indoors. big attitude difference

You are right about needing a car for sure. I have visited both cities and everything is so much more spread out and the public transit infrastructure is not on the same level as B.C.

In B.C having a vehicle is a luxury. In Alberta I would view it as a necessity.

There is a group of people on my facebook that I primarily knew from high school that like to rant and rave about how they are going to move to Alberta to escape the Covid Tyranny....

They don't know what tyranny is lol. My grandparents survived WW2 in Germany and Russia so I don't throw that word around so recklessly.

Nah that's 100% due to urban sprawl. Vancouver is sandwiched between the ocean and mountains - no room. Calgary and Edmonton are on the prairies so you can build out and turn the area into a massive sprawling US-style suburbia. Reining that in has been Nenshi's #1 goal, and he succeeded, but he's about to leave so RIP Calgary. The Mcmansions on the outskirts of the city are ridiculously big.

I never fully understood the desire for Mcmansions.

Zoning changes and building restrictions are coming into place in B.C (albeit far too late/slow) so there won't be as many eyesores on agriculture land anymore.

It just looks so tasteless to me. What the hell is the point of having a 15 bedroom house? Could think of much better things to do with that kind of money.

What angers me about it is the property taxes are very low because it is considered agricultural land. They just have a minimalistic amount of farming activity taking place to get the tax discounts.

Calgary looks even stranger though. From what I have seen it is just mansions close to the highway on the outskirts of town. Looks so desolate. I would not want to live there. It all just seems so out place.

Every city would look like shit as you drive past it staring into its suburbs. I mean Surrey aint anything to write home about.

I don't even recognize Surrey/Langley anymore lol.

Used to be nothing there and now it is set to overtake Vancouver in population.

Of course I still don't want to live there as many areas in Surrey do have their problems.

Not dissing Calgary itself. Just don't get why someone would want to put a mansion beside the highway on the outskirts of town.

the McMansion shit in Vancouver is basically landowners maximizing equity within the constraints of zoning law. can't build multifamily so they just build the most finished square footage possible then flip it.

my parents' cul de sac in Richmond... half the houses have been torn down over the past 5 years for 3-storey blocks that are like 3000-3500 sqft finished. homes in the area were built in the 70's and are in the 2000+ sqft range already. yet the new stuff isn't fitting any more people, it's just more square footage for multimillionaires. complete fucking waste.

I grew up in Richmond in a house built in the late 60's. Very similar style of a lot of the homes in the neighborhood for 15-20 years at least. Probably around the same square footage as your parents place. Always felt it was abundant.

Most houses in the neighborhood featured 3 bedrooms upstairs of a decent size and had a large rec room with a laundry room and a smaller room in the basement. Most also had a full size garage/carport and a good sized balcony overhanging the back yard.

I never saw the need for anything else. I would agree that it is a waste in terms of practicality but that is not what the intention is.

Build a massive house and be left with no yard......
