The Leafs tried to buy-out Cowen in the summer but Cowen's camp "appealed" claiming it's not possible because Cowen is injured.

The case was sent to an arbitrator and his ruling is due on Wednesday.

If Cowen wins, he receives his full 4.5 million salary for the year and the Leafs will place him on LTIR.

If the Leafs win, they only have to pay him 1.5 million total over the next two years and will receive a 650k cap bonus this year but a 750k cap penalty next year.

3 million dollar difference in real cash for a guy who may never play in the NHL again is quite the big deal.

The Edmonton Oilers have placed defenceman Darnell Nurse on injured reserve, the club announced Saturday.

According to head coach Todd McLellan, Nurse is looking at a long-term absence due to a lower-body injury.
