I did meet a white guy who originally went to china for a month for a biking vacation and he ended up staying for 2 years to bike throughout the entire country, he's had multiple instances of where he needed help on the side of the road and people who drove by helped him out or offered him free lodging

I think if you just stick to yourself and not cause a scene, you'll get along just fine

Gotta remember the average people are just people like you and me, the government is extra sensitive about certain stuff so if you go over and play by their rules you'll be fine (unless you're high profile like the Michael's)
