exactly, there's a problem with blacks and hispanics being marginalized in the US. but the raw murder numbers are co-opted by the "guns are scary" lobby and make it seem like the problem is in gun access, which makes no sense when you see the differences across races in violence. the differences also exist in multiracial countries like brazil, colombia and south africa where guns are either heavily restricted or banned. it doesn't deter criminality at all. E: and it steers away from the discourse that should be had, which is how to better include marginalized minorities and assess how can policymakers can improve their condition.

also, the guardian ran an article saying that 114 children in the US were killed in gun accidents in 2014. meanwhile, the rate of death by accidental poisoning amongst children is 0.4 per 100,000, which adds up to 1,200 deaths per year. my point is that the whole "think of the children" rhetoric that american liberals focus on as an argument to ban guns is ridiculous when other common objects children have access to cause far more mortality. there will be idiots who put bleach or oxycontin in children's reach, and there will be idiots who will put guns in children's reach. but the general population shouldn't be punished for the idiocy of a statistically insignificant minority.

Would be interested to see that chart for other forms of assault. If I have the choice between a gun and a knife to kill someone, I'mma pick the one that doesn't require me to come in close quarters.
Personally I have no issue with guns. They can be fun and useful if used properly. I have an issue with the dipshits who use them and think there should at least be a psych eval and some required courses rather than just a 3 day waiting period and background check. Which would of course result in much fewer guns per capita.
