It's considered inappropriate but it shouldn't be. People are so sensitive. It's like pointing out the guy with blue hair in a group of people with blonde hair.
Oh I don't care either way. But they're a professional media organization and should know people are going to react. An editor worth his salt would have caught that before print. Gotta pander to your readers if you want them to read you.
Sounds like they've got a good crisis control squad though.
