This, they are exploiting it.

But of course the Flyers organization is going to use the same arguments which Cratic just used, so there isn't much which can be done.

Well it makes sense as a general rule -- I mean, you don't want to force people to retire. But pronger can't work out without getting nauseous. He can't drive without special glasses. If he does stop getting migraines he's so far out of shape he won't come back right away.

But it only takes one guy who is forced to retire just before he heals to get everyone in an uproar.

There just needs to be a better way.

IMO they should let the contract come off the books/cap if injury is the reason the guy's career ends.

If he just completely blows in old age, that's the team's fault for signing him. But if it's a freak, long-term injury, just nix the contract and so the league and the team doesn't have to go through this whole charade.

Yeah. Or at least offer an appeals process. Honestly I think it's more that I want to see Pronger be able to bow out gracefully and say hey, I had a good run. Instead he's gonna be one of the best players to have been a part of the game but his last 6 years are basically a sham.

Lemieux retired then came back. Pronger could too. This whole smoke and mirrors thing with LTIR just cheapens his career IMO.

I'm surprised they didn't address this during the lockout.

But, to be honest, "circumvention" is stupid. You either break the rules or you don't. Flyers aren't breaking any rules, and the teams who signed all those back-diving contracts before this last lockout weren't breaking any rules either.

The league, PA, owners, governers, etc. all agreed to the same rules. I thought it was a complete joke that the Devils had to give up a 1st rounder lol.

If you didn't want teams to go around the rules, you should have thought them out a bit better -_- Changing rules mid-way through a season is ridiculous. And changing the rules for the contracts signed in the previous CBA is even dumber.

That cap recapture thing is gonna screw with a lot of teams :(

There will always be a way to get around the rules... That's why they have a rule in the CBA that says you can't do things specifically to circumvent the rules. Personally I think if not for the 35+ rule Pronger would not think twice about announcing his retirement at this point. When the decision not to retire is strictly for the purpose of keeping his cap hit off the books, it's circumvention.

But then again how do you prove it?

LTIR should expire after 3 years or something.

If you can't play in 3 years, you're not coming back.

Should come with an free buyout too if the team wants to. Or after 3 years the player is just off the books regardless of contract if he's actually been LTIR for 3 years.

Or something like after 2 years the player is subject to an audit by NHL doctors. If its found that the player is unlikely to play again, he has to be taken off of IR and retire.

The whole point of the 35+ contract thing was so teams wouldn't sign players past a retirement age just to front load the contract for lower cap hit. It was a risk the flyers took when they signed him to his contract, they should take the consequences as stated in the CBA.

LTIR is for players who have a long recovery ahead of them but could realistically still play. NOT to circumvent the cap when something happens and you're stuck with years on a contract that extend into the players mid 40s
