If your budget is 1200 or less don't bother with an apple. They short change you on dollars for features even more on the lower cost macbooks and frankly the way apps have progressed, you'll be hard pressed to find something the iphone is naturally compatible with that you can't get by downloading an app.
Dell has never had good customer service. At your price point I'd go Asus.
Yup , 1,200 is probably the highest I'll go. The asus I'd look to get is the ZenBook. I won't be playing games on this computer what so ever. Basically for watching hockey , work, netflix, and browsing. I'm sold on an ultrabook though, at this point it's a must.

Apple laptop is one of the best on the market imo.
After that, I would shop for a Dell XPS.
If you are like me and are very into "bring your laptop everywhere", then pick a Thinkpad because they are just unkillable. Very pricey, but unkillable.
I don't take it everywhere. I'd take it to school occasionally, and anytime I would go traveling.
The problem I have with Apple is their OS. Most of the programs I use at school are windows programs and I see it every semester that someone in my class will have a problem with their Apple OS using the windows programs.
