That will put them at like 200k under, yeah. Still they need to tread lightly. If they sign or trade at any time during the year which would put them over with Pronger on the books they're circumventing. No one, not even Pronger, has any delusions that he's returning. Only reason he doesn't retire is to allow his cap hit to be buried - thereby getting around requirements for retired 35+ players to count against the cap.

Ltir has always been abused like that. He'll they did the same thing with Chris Gratton years ago.

Coburn or meszaros will probably be gone come draft day though. Stupid rumor out there saying them and the ducks are working on a deal that involves Coburn and 11th overall for Bobby Ryan. Better not happen

Just because it's always been like that, doesn't make it right lol. Especially for almost 6 years on 5m per year.

Pronger is retired, except for cap purposes he's "technically" not retired. That's blatant circumvention.

Again, it's on him to announce his retirement, not the team. And who knows, maybe his condition clears up after another year and he decides to try and make a return

try to* make a return

Also, won't happen. If he recovers he should consider himself lucky that he can live his life without symptoms. He will not risk his health for another return. He has accomplished basically everything that there is to accomplish as a hockey player.

He's been advised by medical specialists that he shouldn't return to hockey. He's basically given retirement speeches in multiple interviews. The league should be able to determine that he's unlikely to ever return. I don't think he realistically thinks he will be back.

When the question is "would he have retired if not for the cap hit situation" and the answer is "realistically, probably yes," there's a problem.

But again, that's not on the team or the league to decide. It's the players decision. The interviews he gave he basically said his main goal is recovering, but if he can come back at some point he will.

*shrug* I just think they need ways of looking at it more closely. From what I have seen and read it doesn't sound realistic that he will return. He may have decided he is done but to "help out the organization" he just hasn't held the press conference yet.

I highly doubt he returns either, but you can't force him to retire. And getting rid of ltir would kill a bunch of teams

He is retired. This isn't what LTIR was created to do.

This, they are exploiting it.

But of course the Flyers organization is going to use the same arguments which Cratic just used, so there isn't much which can be done.
