They were not. They have not signed him yet. As of now it's just a verbal agreement. They need the buyout (and possibly another move if my math is correct) to be able to sign him

Pronger on ltir frees up almost $5M. They just have to have a player on a two way deal (b. Schenn) start the first game in the minors

Capgeek has him on the books though - that 7.9m over is with Streit AND Briere. So they'll be 1.4 over after Streit signs assuming Briere is gone. Schenn will start the season in the AHL like Cratic said, so they'll begin the season with 2m in cap space. Then once Pronger is placed back on LTIR for the year, they'll have 7m in space and can bring Schenn back up for an end result of 3-3.5m in the end.

IMO sounds a shitload like circumventing the cap, to me.

but doesn't schenn have to pass waivers (played over 100 games in the NHL)?

100% he'll be picked up, lol

Not if he starts the season in the AHL, only if he is sent down mid season (iirc)

I would not be surprised if Philly gets hit for cap circumvention at some point. They're trying to get out of the consequences of signing pronger to a long term, obviously front ended contract (goes from 7m to 4m to 575k/575k the last four years). Pronger getting a career ending injury was a risk they had to take when they signed him for an over 35 contract. NHL should throw 35+ out the window if they're gonna allow it.

Prongers contract was looked at when he first signed and was deemed okay. Him getting hurt is a totally different story.

Also, they probably won't even have to demote Schenn. Capgeek has Laughton, Akeson, and McGinn listed on the roster. Remove them (minors) and they got a little over a million in space with Pronger still on the roster.

Whoops, I guess I should look a little more closely next time. My bad.

That will put them at like 200k under, yeah. Still they need to tread lightly. If they sign or trade at any time during the year which would put them over with Pronger on the books they're circumventing. No one, not even Pronger, has any delusions that he's returning. Only reason he doesn't retire is to allow his cap hit to be buried - thereby getting around requirements for retired 35+ players to count against the cap.
