Well the vaccinated people are protected so why does it matter?

The only way the pandemic ends is with herd immunity of 80%+. It’s unfortunate there are so many scientifically illiterate people out there who will drag the pandemic out longer, but I guess societies have always had to deal with dead weight. If you’re able to get the vaccine, you won’t spread it, and you wouldnt burden the hospital system with your sick ass, so makes so much sense just to do it if you’re able to. No excuses outside of just ignorance really.

I don’t think people are scientifically illiterate.

There is a difference between the typical anti vaxxer and those are hesitant to take this one.

This vaccine is rushed, hasn’t gone through the normal testing for vaccines and we don’t know the long term implications of it.

As a healthy, young person who as minuscule chances of complications from getting covid Im hesitant to take a vaccine with limited information.

The FDA still hasn't fully cleared the vaccine so the military had to let members refuse to take it or something

It doesn't mean you're immune, it significantly lowers your chance of getting covid.

It's rushed because the world is facing a pandemic, so the usual time consuming part of phases isnt delayed. Such as getting volunteers for trial, gov funds, etc. The virus isn't completely new, as they're a family of sars/mers so they had 10 yrs of knowledge of its core, so it's not the same as coming up with a complete new vaccine for a entirely new virus.

Ofc we won't know the long term implication because it's just been released and the world doesn't have 5+ yr to wait around to see the negative results. People can't even contain themselves for 5 days or 5 weeks rn to be responsible, and expecting people to be patient and social distance free for 5+ year is unreasonable and impossible.

The currently released vaccines are based off mrna instead of the traditional vaccine, thus they were able to release it quicker.

I guess my question is why would I, a healthy individual with an under 1% chance of complications, take a vaccine with undetermined long term side effects?

Mainly for the high risk groups, and the slim chance of you getting covid that may give you long term health complications and at worst, death. Anyway, if majority of the population did their part to get vaccinated, to greatly reduce the spread and protect those unfortunate high risk groups, this pandemic would be over much sooner and we can get back to our normal lives sooner. However, it's your own choice and body so there's nothing wrong with you not wanting to take the vaccine. I just find it extremely ironic that people are scared of vaccine's long term side effects that are much more slim and less dangerous than covid. What scares you most would be the "unknown" factor, but that unknown factor won't be worse than COVID's proven complications. Why? If you look at the history of vaccine related to covid, from the SARS family, the severe side effects/long term are very slim in general and this is just for extreme cases. You do realize that we all took shitload of vaccines when we were kids right? Our own immune system does all the rest, so it's like a natural process. Most vaccine being developed now are putting in dead virus, weakened virus, part of virus, and now the recent approval of the RNA of the virus, there's really not much to fear about it.

It's usually the people who aren't educated in vaccine developments that spread news like facts that can be believable to most people without much knowledge in the subject. For example, anti vaxxers/bunch of fear mongers first said that these vaccines are extremely rushed (not knowing it's mRNA) and even went as far as saying people will die from it, get severe complications etc and that it's a huge mistake to take it this early. So far, that didn't happen, so now they're literally digging and reaching for any news to prove themselves that they're right, like less than handful of people having severe allergic reaction to it, which is common for all vaccines anyway. Other than that it's been fairly safe as expected, cuz of extreme higher than normal standards of early phases of these vaccine developments. I don't blame them though, as they probably googled something like the average time for vaccine phases etc. They probably read some guideline referring to a brand new disease or completely new virus, which covid is not.

Also if it really was causing a lot of problems, it would have been pulled weeks ago, and 100% of news/reporters would be QQing and milking the shit out of how dangerous these vaccines are, and how stupid it was for them to release it etc. It didn't happen, so now they moved onto "long term side effects, unknown", although 5+ years later it won't even be news cuz even if there was long term complications it won't be worse than covid complications, but hey if you're the unfortunate 1 in a million guy that somehow got rekt by it, you will be rich af! with covid, eh tough luck.

You remember h1n1 right? that vaccine took less than 12 months to develop, with far less participants in the trial than this one with almost 50k. They're the same family as covid, the last pandemic, and the same anti- vaxers/fear mongers also cried about how dangerous it could be, the long term complications yadia yadia ya, which none of it is really news today. The worst event from that vaccine was recalls for the kids, because it wasn't potent enough, which has nothing to do with long term complications. However, anti vaxers/fear mongers are still looking for AHA! i knew it! someone got long term complication from the rushed vaccine!!! I WAS RIGHTTTTTTTT moment... although it seems to have moved onto covid vaccine since that's the focus now.

This is the definition of scientifically illiterate. It’s not rushed, it’s been vetted. It’s as safe, according to our experts, as any other shot you would ever receive. Saying it’s rushed and that you know more than your doctor and national health authorities means you don’t understand the scientific process. You cover yourself in Eau de Panther cologne and you probably can’t tell me every ingredient either
