Maybe I just don't get the intent thing. Because it's a slippery slope, that IMO will lead to:
"Well I'm going to keep my head down so he can't hit me and if he does that's on him because that's him trying to hurt me."
And that's already happening, which leads to hits like this one. How about all the players these days that turn their backs at the very last second when they are against the boards and then are surprised when they get boarded?
If we're going to a place where it's the hitter's responsibility not to hurt a player who is putting himself in a vulnerable position out of ignorance, arrogance or stupidity they should just remove hitting.
I don't totally disagree with you, I think most time those kinds of plays do happen so fast and guys clip heads by accident or won't have time to stop when a guy turns last minute.
This play in particular though it looked pretty clear that he had plenty of time to think it through, and his intent was to destroy a guy rather than try to stop a goal. It wasn't completely late so you could MAYBE argue that he WAS trying to prevent the goal (I'm sure Shiefele will), I just won't buy it in this instance. In 2021 both players have responsiblity, if this was 20 years ago everyone would agree it was clean

I think he is getting suspended, I'm thinking either 2 or 3 games. You?

the rules are clear that you can't zoom across the ice at top speed and lay down a hit for maximum damage. that's literally what the charging penalty is. the onus is on Scheifele to either make a play with the stick or letup, not for Evans to avoid the hit. it's like blaming a pedestrian for not looking both ways when he gets run over by a car that doesn't break.
More like the car saw it as an opportunity to hit someone and didn't break.
