What a joke. I still think that this all falls on the Flames' inept doctor on the bench. Wideman gets his head crushed, gets concussed, is visibly dazed, then mistakes an official for a player on his way to the bench. If the doctor had sent him straight to the quiet room to get his concussion diagnosed, the suspension is either none, or maybe the automatic 10. Or 5, who knows. 20 is an insane amount for something that is an obvious mistake, Flame or otherwise. Meanwhile anything above the 10 gets Wideman suspended throughout the trade deadline, Flames can't move one of the 3 guys they needed to (Russell, Hudler), and we're stuck with him another year. Not to mention missing a player in a playoff push. Burke and Treliving are dragged through appeal meetings after meetings all throughout the trade deadline. The NHL grabs an out of context text from Wideman's phone complaining about the 'dumb refs', obviously frustrated, and the NHL tries to use that as proof that he's out there trying to hunt officials, and try Wideman in the media. What a circus.
And how do you appoint a neutral arbitor and then sue him when you disagree with his decision..?
They're not suing the Arbitrator, they're trying to go against the CBA rule that the Arbitrator's word is final which requires a lawsuit with the other party that entered into the agreement (NHLPA).
I 100% agree with you that Wideman should have gone into the back, and that would have changed the ruling. I bet you if the doctor and/or the team could get fined whenever a player is found to be concussed but wasn't taken off the bench that situation never happens again, or happens very rarely. "He said he felt fine" is the dumbest excuse in professional sports and any doctor that seriously takes that as good enough to put a player back in (or in this case, not even bother to examine him) should lose his license.
/edit: NHL is saying the Arbitrator ruled on whether the suspension was justified, when really he was only supposed to rule on whether or not the league acted in good faith. Which would mean he exceeded his authority under the CBA and it should be nullified.
