If they would have waited a bit, and he didn't get hurt and he put up mediocre numbers, he would have gotten $4M a year at most. Especially on a long term deal. Or they could have waited, he got hurt like he did, and then they could have resigned him for under $4M a year if they wanted to take the chance. What they did do was poor management by a GM who wanted to make his presence felt.
