the rules are clear that you can't zoom across the ice at top speed and lay down a hit for maximum damage. that's literally what the charging penalty is. the onus is on Scheifele to either make a play with the stick or letup, not for Evans to avoid the hit. it's like blaming a pedestrian for not looking both ways when he gets run over by a car that doesn't break.
The charging rule is about as muddy as it gets. The rulebook says "shall mean the actions of a player or goalkeeper who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner".
So what constitutes said distance? What if Schiefele started from his own blueline instead? The player could have still been concussed easily.
Every hit starts with the player skating from X distance.
And where the hell else was he going to skate? He's down 1 with 1 minute left in a playoff game and he's the first guy back with the other team looking to score an empty net goal lol
