Matthews has reportedly signed a 4 year deal @13.25 million.

I guess he wanted to do even more damage to the Leafs.

Sad thing is he screwed the Canucks in the process.

Petey has all kinds of leverage now.

I think the leafs wanted a full 8 year deal/term but they didnt really have any leverage.

Dont worry leafs nation , you guys are getting the, most likely best 4 years, at 13.25M is quite ok.

and Matthews has been pretty good about wanting the mid term deals to maximize his earnings, and i think he's gonna sign an 8 year deal when he's 31 when this 13.25 deal ends, kinda smart if you ask me.

leafs gonna has $35 million locked up in three players, i wonder how many players they gonna lose next season

Taking a gamble, but if the cap keeps going up and he does not suffer injuries that force him to retire early he will make more.

Perhaps he wants trade flexibility if he wants to leave Toronto as well, who knows.

I thought it would be max length contract.

Imagine thinking paying your players alot of money will result in a successful season.
Real dumb. Continue losing in the first or second round.

I knew you were really stupid and know nothing about sports, but didn't realise you were actually dumb enough to suggest leafs didn't sign mathews at a very good avv.

Damn you're right. Paying star players out the ass has worked out so well, cup every time. Lmfao just imagine how much better the team would be if he was making 3-4m less per year. Taking pay cuts often leads to team success. But i guess im just an idiot 🤡

Just to put it in perspective for you, tampa x2, vegas and colorado all won the cup without a single player making more than 10m. But im an idiot and have no CLUE what im talking about

I don't agree with loading up at the top, but that was a dubas thing and he's gone. You have to keep your star players, Tavres will be off the books soon(was a really bad signing) and so will a bunch of other guys you can easily build a team by paying your TOP STAR

I understand this whole joke on the leafs hahaha you guys can't win by paying all your top.guy but this idea that you don't pay your stars and can't win is dumb as fuck. And if what your suggesting is leafs just dump all.top paid salaries and not resign any of them is beyond stupid.

If it's upto me, I'd keep.mathews and she'd the other 3 idiots.

In the grand scheme the Leafs got a Top 5 player in the game to sign through arguably his best years as an UFA. Despite the cap hit it means there's little risk of the contract weighting down the team in case Matthews slows down earlier than expected, and with Tavares walking in less than two years they should still have room to keep building a competitive team around him. And hockey gods forbid, if it comes down to it it's a lot easier to move Matthews signed for 4 years than 8.

I certainly was not implying the laffs should cut ties with matthews. But sit the mf down and explain to him they want to offer him less money to be able ice a more competitive team and really push for the cup.
A resonable person should realize that making 10m/yr vs 13m/yr will not affect his life in any major way and can seriously benefit the team. Do the same or cut ties with tavares and/or marner and the team might actually turn a corner.
