dont forget the sharks were handcuffed by EK having a no move clause he would have to waive and only willing to go to a contender. that limits your partners very much along with the $

Yeah, but ur gm wanted too much with barely any cap retention lol. He thought he was trading prime ek in his 20s

i think they were willing to retain 50% if the offer was good enough but obviously you prefer to not soak 6m in cap
i think all 3 teams got what they wanted and "won" the trade in their own way
SJ isnt stuck with karlsson and picked up a 1st rounder and didn't retain like 6mill piked up a couple players they can maybe flip for more picks
pens got karlsson and dumped some contracts to clear space
habs got petry back with retained salary and picked up a 2nd rounder

seems like pretty good moves for all the teams involved

Nah, they made it clear they ain't budging with the retention. Hence the hold up, and Habs saved the day being the 3rd team to make the trade happen.

Sjs got rid of ek contract, and got a 1st...but top 10 protected... Which kind of defeats the purpose of getting a good 1st Rd pick. Clearly they valued dumping his contract more than the haul they initially wanted for him

Rumours of them wanting a big haul was also claiming they would retain 50% from what I saw if they aren't retaining 50% obviously the returns going to be lower
If karlsson requested a trade of course they valued getting rid of his contract over keeping him they are rebuilding and able to pick up a 1st rounder for a guy that wants out with a crazy contract
yeah i think we are going to start seeing a lot more 3 team trades until the cap goes up not a lot of teams have cap space to make the moves they want a 3rd team options up lots of potential options

top 10 protected so what? unless the pens miss the playoffs and win the lottery I don't see them being a top 10 pick so I feel the trade was done assuming its a mid-late pick

No, the rumor was that Grier wanted a huge haul, but he wasn't willing to retain the full 50% either. Was like 20% at most and 3 1sts or whatever it was. After a lot of teams nope'd the fuck out, he was left with only handful of teams and none of them were close to his initial ask. Bunch of reports came out he severely misread the market and value for him.

Then it leaked that ek wanted out which made the situation worse, cuz prior to all this the reports were saying ek wanted to stay in sj.

So Grier traded to dump his contract, rather than for the player. So Top 5 protected might've been better, top 10 is meh. Dubas of all took him to the cleaners

Fuck ye, but then all he got for him was basically a mid 1st I guess that's better than paying a first to dump his contract
