Still think Pittsburgh paid to0 much.

They 1.5 million in retention on Karlsson contract but they took on a bit over 1.5 million with Petry for the next 2 years.

Essentially Karlsson is 11.66m cap hit for 2 years. He had a career year and stayed healthy somehow. Regression to the mean suggests his point totals take a dive and he gets hurt again.

Dubas loves giving away 1st round picks.

Montreal could flip Petry and retain another 25% of his salary to make him an attractive trade target.

They could get more picks for him a year later lol.

I think Montreal stealth won this trade if that is what pans out because they dumped Hoffman too.

Seems like a conflict of interest in a sense.

Even if Mcdavid takes on a new agent.

It’s also the Oilers being slimy to try to get McDavid not to leave.

Hard to say that pittsburgh gave too much in this case they gave one bad contract in granlund, they gave a dman that was overpaid and on regression in petry, they gave a 1st only with ruuta to sj for karlsson, they gave a 2nd, legare (c tiers prospect) petry with 25% retention and casey desmith a backup goalie.

I think they gave a lot of players but nothing jawdropping

The winner of this trade is montreal and pittsburgh for getting rid of two big contracts (petry/granlund) and hoffman going elsewhere in this deal

the biggest issue about this trade for pittsburgh is that they traded all their 1st/2nd for next 2 years (correct me if im wrong)
their core is all over 35, their goalie is uncertain in jarry (wouldnt surprise me to see pitts trying to fetch allen from montreal but that would be hilarious after they traded desmith)
while san jose outside of the 1st round pick i dont see the players they got getting back to produce big numbers and ruuta never produced big numbers

IMO the trade was a great swing at the fences by Dubas. The team isn't going anywhere without Crosby and Malkin, they're slowly declining and the window needs to be forced open as long as possible. They have 2 maybe 3 players tops who could make a splash on an ELC and nothing afterwards, their main roster players are either prime aged or 30+. There's no point in holding futures that would only have an impact 4+ years from now, Pens have to be all-in then once the two superstars have nothing left to give, implode and rebuild.

Dubas' problem to solve is needing to unfuck the myriad of terrible contracts Hextall handed out while acquiring win-now players with limited assets. With the Karlsson trade he somehow managed to make that win-now move while simultaneously dumping several bad contracts and not needing to give up the few prized prospects the org still has. Ruuta was a loss but not much, he's the kind of boring sandpaper guy needed for playoffs but he can easily be replaced down the road. The team improved considerably, came out healthier capwise for the next two seasons and still has fat to shed.

This was a chel trade for the Penguins. On the surface the Sharks did fine considering Karlsson's massive contract and NTC, but the questions that will linger is why didn't Grier simply retain more to get a better return - granted there was no better time to make the trade, but with only minimal retention I don't think any team attempting to contend other than the Penguins would try to make it work. Even for someone as good as Karlsson, he could regress or have another major injury - in which case the team would be stuck with a gigantic caphit they wouldn't be able to move for years. So there was only one team where the right decision was to accept that risk.

Lol sj wanted like 5 assets for EK, and reports say that sj got the wrong read cuz nobody even showed interest aside from Pittsburgh and Carolina. Except their offers weren't even close to their asking price, especially when sj wasn't gonna even retain half.

Dubas got the best player in trade and shed 3m cap space. Worth the gamble cuz team gotta keep trying to compete while crosby/malkin/Letang can still play.

dont forget the sharks were handcuffed by EK having a no move clause he would have to waive and only willing to go to a contender. that limits your partners very much along with the $
