Il wager you've never been to Edmonton downtown.
I'll wager I've been to both downtown Calgary and Edmonton, and I've been to the area where Edmontons arena is currently built BEFORE it was built. SP is 100% correct, Edmontons downtown needed the revitalization, Calgary is not in need of the same face lift.
Like I said initially, I dont agree with publically funding arenas but I understand there likely will be some funding for the Flames arena which is fine. The thing that irritates me about the Flames is that they proposed something completely outlandish initially, threatened to move, finally gave a more realistic project and continue to threaten to move. The threatening to move is exactly like a kid who takes his ball and leaves because he doesnt get what he wants. Except it's even worse because I know this is a group of billionaires threatening to take their ball and go home, but the NHL wont let them

Great point brought forward in regards to gentrification. This is something that has been evident in Vancouver. It has displaced many out of their homes. I do not know the severity in Edmonton or the potential severity of that in Calgary.....
I agree with everyone that if it is not revenue neutral or revenue positive walk away. Like I said I do not believe in corporate handouts. the taxpayers investment has to yield a favorable return. If it does not, they should not get shit.
Whether or not this 300 million is a robbery is open for debate. In my opinion we will have to wait at least a decade to see if it paid off. Maybe it will, maybe it will not....
It was a robbery but I think it provided enough postitive return for Edmonton for it to be worthwhile. I don't think we would see the same investment in surrounding infrastructure in Calgary.
